It has been just over a week and a half since Bali Villa Connect 2026. The dust has settled, I am back in Australia, but the conversations I had on the ground over there are still rattling around in my head. So before too much time passes, I want to take you behind the scenes.

While I was at the conference I grabbed a microphone, found nine of the smartest operators and suppliers walking around the floor, and asked all of them the same question:

What should short-term rental operators be thinking about for the end of 2026?

What I got back was a really clean picture of where the industry’s head is at right now. Nobody gave the same answer twice. But the themes that came through say a lot about where we are.

Here’s what they said, grouped by theme.

Networking is the foundation.

I started with Kadek, the BVRMA Chairman. He didn’t hesitate. Networking. When you have the network, you have the ecosystem. And when you have the ecosystem, the business follows. Your network is your net worth, basically. Coming from the man who just built a 1,200-person conference in 2.5 months, that one carries some weight.

Automate, but don’t complicate.

Three of the conversations came back to this. Max Del Vita said embrace AI, understand it, and use it to claw back time so you can do what you actually do best. Tejas Halbe (Strategy Q’s) put it even more bluntly: automate the repetitive stuff (listings, guest comms, pricing) and use the time you save to make guests want to come back. And Julie George (Million Dollar Host) summed it up with the line I keep thinking about. Automate, don’t complicate. You don’t need to be a Claude expert. You just need fewer manual repeats.

The basics still win.

Diego Suso forom Hostify made the case that we’ve all gotten so caught up in the flashy stuff (AI listings, smart locks, dynamic pricing) that we’ve forgotten guests are people, not robots. They want a good bed and a good bathroom. Get the fundamentals right and everything else falls into place.

Compliance is unsexy and absolutely essential.

Yoav Tourel didn’t sugarcoat it. Compliance isn’t glamorous, isn’t AI-ish, isn’t sexy. But it’s probably the single most important thing for the long-term sustainability of your business, and it’s only going to intensify next year. Reto Wyss (Elevate) added the practical layer: stop letting the guest be your quality assurance team. Document your processes, train your staff to catch issues before check-in, and build a continuous learning loop from every guest complaint.

Watch the market, move fast.

Deepanshu from PriceLabs flagged the one nobody wants to hear. The market is volatile. Bali supply is up, Middle East tourism is drying up, the global picture is messy. The operators who survive aren’t the ones with the best gut feel. They’re the ones watching the data hardest and making decisions fastest. The early bird catches the worm, and right now there’s a lot of late birds.

And the line that keeps coming back to me.

Adhiguna closed the loop with the answer I keep thinking about. Stay true to your identity. People fly halfway around the world because they want to experience something they can’t get at home. Trends are short-lived. Identity lasts forever. In a year where everyone is chasing AI agents and shiny tools, that’s the kind of grounding most operators need to hear.
